Playing Ayckbourn: From Page to Stage

WHAT IS IT? This two-day workshop is a practical guide to reading, rehearsing and performing the work of our greatest living playwright. Sir Alan Ayckbourn, as well as being our most prolific contemporary playwright is also the second most performed playwright in the world, second only to Shakespeare! He is “a collector of people”, he observes and records human nature and then puts his idiosyncratic, often comic twist on a quintessentially English milieu. Stephen has spent the last year working with and being directed by the man himself and has as a result gained many insights into his writing, directing and stagecraft, his passions and his pet peeves. HOW WILL IT WORK? Using scenes and monologues from both an Ayckbourn classic and his latest offering, we will explore his characters, themes, directing style and what he expects from his actors in the audition, the rehearsal room and on stage. WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT? You will leave this workshop with practical insights into breaking-down and interpreting the text, creating characters and how to play “in the round” as well as what Sir Alan expects from his actors both in the audition, the rehearsal room and in performance. Price: £60
