Alan Bates Award Application

HOW TO APPLY

Applying for The Alan Bates Award is very easy. You will need to send in a completed application form and a ninty second video.

All applications are due by 11:59pm on March 4, 2018.

What will happen to my video?

Your video will be sent directly to our application processing partner Casting Networks International and processed along with your application ready for the Round 1 judging.

You will receive several confirmation emails from the Actors Centre, Casting Networks and WeTransfer. These are confirming the different sections of your applications have been delivered and processed.

How will the judging process work?

No less than 6 industry judges will be watching, assessing and scoring each and every video we receive in Round 1.

The self-tape auditions (Round 1) will be assessed and shortlisted by the following judges:

  • Elliot Barnes-Worrell – Actor and Alan Bates Award Winner 2012.
  • Joel Fisher – Executive Producer and Creative Producer of the Actors Centre.
  • Laurence Mitchell – Actor and Acting Coach.
  • Kris Phillips – Actor and facilitator
  • Jill Riddiford – Actor and Drama School audition specialist.
  • Andy Whyment – Director, Artistic Director of Squint Theatre Company.

You will receive an email detailing whether or not you have been shortlisted for Round 2 of the Award’s audition process no later than Monday 26 March.

  • NOTE: Round 2 will take place on Sunday 8 April.

Is your video suitable? …time for a final check!

Remember:

  • Your video application must be no more than 90 seconds long.
  • This includes you introducing yourself (see video below) and ONE MINUTE of a speech – Contemporary or Classical, it is your choice.
  • Make sure you are well lit, speak clearly and that the camera/tablet/smartphone is in a good enough position and height to capture you.
  • Your video should be saved in one of the following file types:
    • .MOV
    • .MP4
    • .MPEG
    • .WMV
  • Watch the video below by past Alan Bates Award winner, Georgia Frost, to get a better idea of how your video should look, sound and the introduction you need to give us.

NOTE: You MUST send your video using the link below in order to be submitted for Round 1 of the Alan Bates Award.

Uploading to WeTransfer

Are you submitting via smartphone?

  • Download the WeTransfer app to your device (smartphones can only access WeTransfer via its app).
  • Clicking the button below will open your WeTransfer app (or prompt a download).
  • Select your video from your camera roll, click "next" and then it will bring up an email details box.
  • You will need to manually enter the "to" email which is [email protected]
  • Write your own email in the "from" box and your name in the "message" box.
    • NOTE: you must use the same email address you entered in the online application form.
  • Click "transfer".
    • The video will now upload, it will tell you how much is left to load via a percentage counter, this can take a short while depending on the size of your video. Please keep the window open and your device connected to the internet until this has completed.

Are you submitting via tablet, mac or PC?

  • Clicking the button below will open up our dedicated WeTransfer web page.
  • To the left of this page you will notice a window with a “+” sign at the top.
  • Select this “+” sign to upload your application video from your device’s library.
  • Next you will see that an email address has been automatically added as the recipient. Leave this as it is. This is the destination email WeTransfer will send your video to.
  • Please add your email in the box below this that states "Your email".
    • NOTE: you must use the same email address you entered in the online application form.
  • The last section of the upload box is a “Message” box please just type your name in here.
  • Lastly, click the “Transfer” button.
    • The video will now upload, it will tell you how much is left to load via a percentage counter, this can take a short while depending on the size of your video. Please keep the window open and your device connected to the internet until this has completed.
  • Once fully uploaded and completed… You are done!
