Ian began his lifelong passion for performance as a teenage actor and member of the company of the Leeds Arts Theatre in the late 1970s. During this time he begged a job as a stage hand from Stanley and Michael Joseph, owner managers of the historic City Varieties Theatre Leeds, ‘I remember having a long conversation with Stan in the green room one evening, he wasn’t keen, but I only asked for my bus fare as pay – so he hired me and I learned much about how a busy theatre works’.
When he was 21 Ian was lucky enough to meet the late and incredibly gifted actress Heather Sears during her classic period of work at the Leicester Haymarket theatre. Heather coached Ian for his drama school entry. Her insight, craft and suggested audition pieces were invaluable. After training there was musical theatre and cabaret.
These days Ian works as a freelance Human Resources professional specialising in developing people and organisational performance. He has held several senior roles in some of the great Departments of State. He now continues to work across Whitehall and at the BBC as a freelance consultant. He is a mentor and coach to senior civil servants, corporate professionals and television production executives. Ian is passionate about the aims of the Actors Centre in providing help and development and networking to emerging actors and is honoured to contribute to the work of the Board. Ian says - ‘I never forget what it is to be young and hungry and looking for a platform’.
