An Update from the Chief Executive

An Update from the Chief Executive

7 September 2020

Like many unsubsidised charities, The Actors Centre has experienced significant losses during its closure due to Covid-19 and it is with great sadness that we announce, immediately following the run of Sunnymead Court, The Actors Centre will remain closed for 2020. Throughout the pandemic, The Actors Centre has continued to operate online programmes of work and our workshop and theatre programmes will continue online for the remainder of the year. This has not been an easy decision to make however, it is not financially viable for the organisation to physically reopen in the current climate.

The Actors Centre will run out of money by December 2020 and we are now renewing our fundraising appeal; calling for urgent donations to save our organisation. While Covid-19 certainly represented the biggest threat in our organisation’s 42-year history, we are now facing the heartbreaking reality that The Actors Centre may not exist in a few months. While we have applied to Arts Council England’s Cultural Recovery Fund, the uncertainty of the outcome, combined with the large volume of applicants means that, like much of the cultural sector, we are having to face difficult cost-saving measures across all aspects of our organisation.

The majority of our team will remain furloughed until the end of October, with our current programmes delivered by our small, remaining team. It goes without saying that the cultural sector has been the worst-affected by the pandemic and when our beloved theatres do reopen, we know that we will be returning to an irrevocably changed cultural landscape. At The Actors Centre, we have been using this time to negotiate our space within the industry and reimagine what the future of the organisation will look like. We are excited about how we will move The Actors Centre forward, however we cannot get there without your urgent support.

Thank you to everyone who has already generously donated to #SupportTheActorsCentre and if you are in a position to help our organisation at this most crucial time, please visit actorscentre.co.uk/donate

Thank you,
Amanda Davey
Chief Executive, The Actors Centre

About The Actors Centre

Established in 1978, THE ACTORS CENTRE is the UK’s leading professional development organisation, supporting actors and creative talent throughout their careers. Through an unrivalled programme of diverse workshops and masterclasses — led by distinguished practitioners from the worlds of theatre, film and television — The Actors Centre provides an essential space for artists to network, to share, to create, to thrive. We strive to programme an eclectic mix of original, evocative, diverse and challenging theatre that attracts a wide and varied audience.

At the core of our organisation is a commitment to supporting artists — offering opportunities to emerging, as well as established, artists and companies. Our flagship theatre space, the Tristan Bates Theatre, established in 1994, is a celebrated off-West End venue, presenting high quality, four week plays and musicals. Our smaller space, the John Thaw Studio promotes new writing and work-in-progress and allows artists to receive vital feedback on work currently in development. The John Thaw Studio is also home to the John Thaw Initiative, with each season tailored towards supporting a particular demographic of artist, or a particular theme of work.
